Top 10 Health Apps for 2015

As we get closer to 2015, I have no doubt many of you will be contemplating making 2015 the year you get fit / lose weight / go to bed earlier / drink more water or just generally look after yourself better. Here is my list of the top 10 apps for populating your smartphone with this year to help make your resolutions happen.

You may find that many of them work really well with the BTBS New Year's Resolution Health Plan. Don't feel you have to install them all in one go and take up all the healthy habits at once. Instead spread them out over a couple of months or weeks so that you can sustain your resolution long into 2015 to avoid surrendering your goals in February. Remember, its more about a gradual 'revolution' rather than 'resolution'.

Beat Sugar Cravings with Herbal Teas

£2.50 for a box of 25 tea bags
Throughout December, the office I work in is always cluttered with tins of biscuits, mince pies and sweets. It becomes quite a challenge to walk past, especially when I'm under pressure to meet a tight deadline before the Christmas Vacation and feel the need to comfort eat.

I've found that a good way to banish sugar cravings is to distract yourself with fruit infused water or a strong tasting herbal tea.

Food Trend of 2015: The Rise of The Beetroot

The year 2013 saw chia and flax being added into an array of health foods while 2014 saw the promotion of everyone's favourite leafy green veg, kale. 2015 looks like it will be all about beetroot. Beetroot is increasingly being added into smoothies, sports drinks and energy bars as a way of harnessing the vegetable's high levels of nitrate.

While I'm sure these 'food trends' are a direct product of marketing, there's still no harm in including more chia/ flax/ kale/ beetroot in your diet.

What Every Parent Needs to Know About Flu

Winter is my least favourite season. Ok, so the frost certainly makes the streets and parks look like a winter wonderland in the morning sun and Christmas is an exciting time of year, but I quickly forget about all of that when everyone around me gets hit by colds and the flu. If you're a parent, chances are at some point you will have to take a day or two off work to look after an older relative or your child when they're suffering from the Flu, you may even come down with it yourself.

Flu is certainly nothing like a nasty cold, it can be painful and debilitating and has a sudden onset (7). Most healthy people will recover from it after a few days of plenty of water and sleep, however there is always the risk of complications resulting from an already compromised immune system and it can be fatal for people with long term health concerns.

Going on a Skiing Holiday or Love Water Sports? You'll need a Waterproof Sports Bag

OverBoard Waterproof Duffle Bag
If you've ever been in a boat with someone who just can't get the hang of using the oras, or on a peddalo when the waves are getting up, then you'll understand the level of fear you have when you're looking at that canvas bag sitting at your feet containing your phone, camera and money when there's a very real possibility that it'll be going for dunk when you fall into the water.

You can't always leave your bag on a beach or dock if the whole family is going with you on the boat or if you're on your own - there's the risk of it being stolen. But at the same time, our phones, cameras and kindles are expensive to replace should they get water damaged. This leaves us with too options - be the one to stay on the dry land and miss out on all the fun and exercise, or find a waterproof bag so that all the essentials can come with you.

Book Review: Letting Go of Self Destructive Behaviours by Lisa Ferentz

Self destructive behaviours can come in many forms, including eating disorders, addictions and self mutilation.

In both my career as Social Worker and in my personal life I have seen many people (myself included) use a variety of self-destructive behaviours to cope with the traumatic experiences and the emotions they hide inside themselves.
